Robert Smith joined the Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic faculty in 2012 after more than four decades practicing patent, trademark and copyright law, ten years of experience as a professional engineer, and substantial general business experience.

Before beginning his 30-plus year career in private practice, Professor Smith, the holder of a J.D. from New York University, an M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut, and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, held in-house IP attorney positions with North American Philips Corporation, Litton Industries, General Electric Company, and United Technologies Corporation. His patent prosecution work has resulted in the issuance of more than 500 patents, and he has been involved in the successful completion of licensing matters throughout the world, including in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Far East and South America. Before earning his law degree and beginning his long and highly successful career as an intellectual property attorney, he worked as an electrical engineer for Airborne Instruments Laboratory, Pan American World Airways and United Technologies.

Professor Smith, who is admitted to practice in Connecticut and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, teaches and supervises Law School students representing individuals, small business and non-profit organizations in a broad range of intellectual property and related law issues, A member of the Connecticut Intellectual Property Law Association, he also serves as senior legal counsel for the Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic
